Some people have asked us what the Motorsport Sisterhood store is all about. Why, after all, does a non-profit community need a store? Can we not survive on donations?
To start with, we don't want donations. We want to provide value to the community for the money we receive. We are not a charity, we're a value-adding organisation. We're here to be participants in people's stories, not condescending benefactors.
Our store is all about raising money to support careers women's careers in motorsport. Yes, we're open to men who are artists and makers. Yes, we're open to fans of multiple genders who want to contribute art/writing/expertise. But the money we make is to support women in motorsport.
We aim to support women in motorsport in three primary ways:
We feel that these three steps are crucial to increasing the number of women who participate in motorsports. (And yes, we have empirical data to back up those assumptions.) By providing both community and financial support when and where it is most needed, we can help bridge the gap between where we are now (women representing less than 15% of motorsport employees/participants, and ~37% of fans), and where we want to be (women representing ~50% of employees/participants and fans).
When you buy from our store, you are providing seed capital for these initiatives. In time, we will also organise events in areas where we have more than 100 members. These will include junkbox grands prix, adventure rallies, TED-style conference weekends, supercar experience weekends, annual awards galas, among other plans.
